map3 is a very lightweight mapping program, I wrote it because I was going to take a trip in a car
with someone who is never wrong and was going to map read [because the person
in the car who _is_ always right gets car sick, and I'm dyslexic and don't know
left from right] So I got an inverter, a small laptop with a big disk a small GPS receiver
with a magnetic antenna and a map dataset. It worked very well and on the one occasion we did get
lost it told us exactly where we were.
map3 is written entirely in C and can handle Irish and british grids [they
disagree about which way north is and how long a meter is]. It's very efficient
it caches images itself and renders directly to the screen using Xlib calls,
it can handle 16,24 and 32 bit displays. If you want 8 bit you'll need to use
gis instead.
Files for the project are avaiable here.
and here's a screenshot, again the map has been blurred due to lawyers.
